The Beatles Mass

June 11th, 2010 · No Comments · Uncategorized

On a hot and humid night the crowds came from all over Chicagoland…

The singers warmed up.

The guitarists kept cool

The programs were psychedelic colors of course!

Paul wrote to the Romans “love is the fulfilling of the law.”

The brass got chops for “All you need is love”

The gospel reading was “all you need is love” by Jesus [...]

Immigration Walk

June 3rd, 2010 · No Comments · Uncategorized

I was asked to bless these pilgrims who were walking from our neighborhood in Chicago to Woodstock to protest counties’ and suburbs’ access to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement database to find undocumented immigrants. Along with other community leaders I gave a blessing and then walked a few blocks with them. My friend Ere [...]

Christmas

December 25th, 2009 · 2 Comments · Uncategorized

We had three Christmas services this year:• An afternoon Christmas Eve service (the children’s service);• A late Christmas Eve service; and• A Christmas morning service.
Following are some photographs from each, starting with The Children’s Service. In the interest of getting this posted in my lifetime, commentary will be sparse. I didn’t capture a usable picture [...]

December 8th, 2009 · No Comments · Uncategorized

The traditional service of Lessons and Carols took on a new look this year, as we celebrated the Feast of St. Nicholas with Stories and Songs of St. Nicholas on Sunday afternoon, December 6.
In a special service written by Kara, readings from Scripture, newspapers, and poems were mixed with hymns and anthems, and narration by [...]

Rite 13

November 23rd, 2009 · 1 Comment · Uncategorized

Yesterday a new liturgical celebration came to St. John’s in the form of “Rite 13″, a ceremony marking the passage to adulthood of teenagers in the J2A (Journey to Adulthood) program. As the Worship Wizard wrote in the morning’s service bulletin, the teenagers are welcomed “to the journey of becoming adults.” In part, this service [...]

Pet Blessing

October 5th, 2009 · No Comments · Uncategorized

Yesterday was the Feast of St. Francis, or – as it’s known in the latest liturgical re-write, soon to hit the shelves of seminary bookstores everywhere – Pet Blessing Sunday!
Just kidding. (Good thing for me Kara has a sense of humor.)
Actually, the Pet Blessing came between services this year, in the garden. The 8:00 [...]

A Baptism in the Garden

July 28th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Uncategorized

I may be wrong, but I think Sunday was a first for St. John’s. Services were held outdoors in the garden; nothing new about that, but Hideo, the latest addition to the St. John’s family, was baptised during the second service. And if an outdoor baptism is not unusual enough for Episcopalians, the second service [...]

Julianne, Deacon

June 6th, 2009 · 2 Comments · Uncategorized

An impressive contingent from St. John’s (Suellen and I counted 21) made its way to St. James Cathedral downtown today to witness Julianne’s ordination to the Diaconate.
Through the kindness of David and Matt, who are real photographers, I was permitted into the press box to take pictures of the event. I learned at Heidi’s ordination [...]

Future Leaders

June 5th, 2009 · No Comments · Uncategorized

Last Sunday “The Quest” class learned about the Eucharist by dressing up as priests and practicing the words and gestures of the liturgy.
St. John’s children are like those from Lake Wobegon – they are all smarter, funnier, and more beautiful than any other children in the world!
Reading the prayers:
Washing hands:
They said their arms got [...]
